First stop was the Fiber Loft in Harvard, MA, where we waited with other eager shoppers for the store to open at 10:00. You can see what a friendly bunch they were. We traded stories about the Knitting Olympics and showed each other our projects. Lucky for us, the Fiber Loft was having a SALE SALE SALE, and we both found some beautiful yarn.
Maisie also acquired a drop spindle and some wool fleece to experiments with.

Our second stop that day was Kaleidescope Yarns up in Burlington, Vermont. We had heard about a gorgeous "wall of Koigu" that we were dying to see. The shop was gorgeous, but the Great Wall of Koigu had been sadly depleted only the week before when the owners had a sale to make room for new Koigu colors coming in. We got to see the blank sapce in between.
Actually, it wasn't that bad. There were still some Koigu yarns left, and even a few discount skeins that they dye with the leftovers colors at the end of a run.

We stayed overnight in Burlington at The Inn at Essex and kept to our room, knitting and watching TV. For dinner we ordered the most scrumptious roast chicken in the world from room service and devoured it. Then we turned off the TV, knit some more, and as the evening got late, we started making up custom Mad Libs for each other and had a hilarious time reading them back. My favorite was one Maisie wrote for me involving a ride in a cream puff with Napolean Dynamite and squeaky cheese.

The next day we stopped in Woodstock, Vermont at the Whippletree shop, and then wandered into a wonderful thrift store where Maisie found a WWI green wool U.S. Marine topcoat. A little big, but very cool.

By then, we realized we were running too late to get to Lenox, MA by 4 p.m., when Colorful Stitches closed (Sunday hours), so we poked around in a jewelry store and a flannel shirt store and then stopped by the Mobil station for some high-quality road-trip snacks.

We stayed in Lenox in a beautiful Victorian house with 22 guest rooms. We were the only guests that night and we were sure that a murder-mystery was taking place around us. (Windy night, empty house, two quiet knitters all alone. . .)

The next day we were rewarded for our patience when Beautiful Stitches opened at 11 and we explored their fabulous selection.

We made it to Webs in Northampton that afternoon, and wandered dazed through their huge store. Maisie asked someone to demonstrate the use of the drop spindle, and then got to try her hand at a spinning wheel. We left with lots of yarn, and fortunately, a yarn-baller and a swift, so Maisie will no longer be obliged to conscript her father into service before begining a new project.

We had a few more places on our list, but at that point we stopped and declared victory. We celebrated with Herrel's ice cream and a long drive home listening to "The Sea of Trolls" by Nancy Farmer.

It was a great trip. Immensely satisfying despite the fog and rain (good weather for knitters!) Our thirst for exotic yarn stores was slaked, and our mother-daughter bond strengthened through common interest, humor and adventure.

Rowan: Results?
Colorful.
Messy.
Beautiful.

Beautiful right up through the extensive cold-water rinsing. Still beautiful as we followed the directions on the kit and put all ten skeins of tie-dyed yarn in the washing machine. It seemed quite reasonable.

Until the washing machine got unbalanced from the heavy bundles of yarn, and repeated the gentle wash cycle over and over and OVER. When we finally opened the door mid-cycle (the 5th time?), the yarn looked quite different from the neat little bundles we had created.

It became: YARNZILLA.

Rowan: What do you do when it's 10 p.m. and your daughter has a brilliant plan to tie-dye some yarn? Go for it, of course. We ended up using a tie-dye kit that was meant for t-shirts. It instructed us to bundle the yarn up with rubber bands, soak it in a soda ash solution, and then saturate it with dye. We were having trouble getting the dye into the middle of the skeins, so we used syringes (leftover from giving medecine to pet parakeets) to inject the dye. We mixed the colors they provided to create oranges, purples and greens as well as the blue, yellow and red that came in the kit.

Here are photos of Maisie winding yarn balls in preparation to cast on at Opening Ceremonies for the Knitting Olympics. It is my first attempt at intarsia, and at the stage in the picture, I had already knit it and tinked it back several times. It is further along now, but I got so proud of myself for figuring out the intarsia that I forgot to follow the pattern and ended up with a purple rectangle. I have put it aside for now.

On the last day of the Winter Games, we attended a Closing Ceremonies party for Team Boston. We met a bunch of great knitters and saw some amazing projects. Maisie had mostly finished her sweater, but I will have to try my hand at the NEXT Olympics.

Maisie: Yes, it's just me again. Stop by again tonight and we'll have much, much more info! And PICTURES of our knitting for once! I finished "Across the Nightengale Floor" while on the airplane flying to Arizona to visit my mom after her surgery. Then I thought my mom might enjoy doing the same, so I read aloud to her from Amy Tan's new book "Saving Fish from Drowning" while she knit for a while on my sock. I would have one one and be cruising along on the second one if not for the fact that I did the toe decreases on the top and bottom of the toe, not the sides, so I need to rip back a bit. The pink one is for my friend Louisa, the green for my friend Arjun, and the pukey one for Katy. I just wish I was at LEAST at the leg already. Exhibit 4: The orange-red, demim Honeysuckle sweater for me. I have included a picture pre-ripping. I've altered it for my own stitch pattern and my own cuffs. I am making moss stitch cuffs that are shorter than the model's in the picture in Simple Knits by Laines Du Nord. Also, I have columns of reverse stockingette stitch that look like those in the Cingular Wireless commericals. The reason I need to rip it out is because with the columns going up as they are now, they won't end before the armhole. So, I just did some serious ripping and re-winding (by hand, and it's not pretty), and I'll redo some tonight. Exhibit 5: the blue Blaze sweater (I like to call it What in Blue Blazes) for my friend Sarah (or Shorty). I'm ALMOST DONE with the armhole at the front. Really I am. 17 out of 20 cm. Go knitter go. And finally, Exhibit 6: some sort of lace sock from Sockbug. Mine does not look like the one in the picture whatsoever, but I have heard tales of the magic of blocking knitted lace, and I like knitting it. This is also out of Lorna's Laces. I'll do some serious knitting tonight, and order the yarn for Trudie's Big Sack Sweater from Stitch N' Bitch for the Knitting Olympics, plus add buttons to our blog, tomorrow. (Most knitters are lucky: they don't have homework.)

Rowan: Au contraire! Knitting is precisely what peple do when they have other work to attend to, but want to avoid it. I know I'd rather knit than pay my bills.
Especially right now, because Maisie got me started on a sock with my excellent Italian self-striping stretchy yarn. While we knit we are listening to "Across the Nightengale Floor" which we downloaded from Audible.com. It's a great way to finish the evening.
I've been wondering about something. Are there any other knitters out there who also like archery? Maisie and I do. Is it something about bowstrings and arrow shafts looking like knitting needles and yarn? Is it the sharp and pointy qualities? Or maybe it has to do with focus and absorption in your task.

Here is the awesome sweater Maisie knit for Phil.

Maisie is modeling my lumpy first hat. (I won't say her name, but I can tell you that she is now at the stage whered she can't tie her shoes because her belly's too big.) It is the Big Bad Baby Blanket out of Stitch 'N Bitch. Maisie started it off in beautiful moss stitch with the yarn doubled, but when I took over, I had to undo each row after I knit it because I don't have the hang of moss stitch yet. Now I'm practicing my moss over on the little orange swatch. I hope I'll graduate back to the blanket soon.

Maisie: The cabled socks are getting ignored, uuuuunfortunately. I picked up some really nice blue merino wool at Wild and Wooly Studios because they are having their winter clearance sale. I also got a Rowan pattern book, and am making a sweater for my friend Sarah. The plain old boring socks I'm knitting for my boyfriend, Phil, are progressing slowly but surely and we have started a baby blanket for my aunt's baby. No progress yet on the second leg of the romper that I'm working on for my bass teacher's baby (the legs take for-stinking-ever.) Pictures later, I'm too lazy right now. Plus, I taught knitting at Afterschool today. My students learned very well, but their cheap acyrilic is hard to recover from.

Rowan: When I got home with my new yarns from the Wild and Wooly sale, I realized that I have a stash. Until now, I just thought of the yard beside my bed as a few future projects, but now the pile is growing, so I guess I have to face facts. Which makes me wonder: is there any difference between stashing and hoarding?

First posts are the worst posts

Rowan: This is a mother-daughter blog about knitting. Maisie taught herself to knit, and now is teaching me. I used to knit not, but now I knit Knots. So far I am content to knit lumpy hats and slubby scarves. We like to knit while listening to audiobooks or watching The Simpsons. I recently finished a deflated blue hat knit on four double-pointed needles. It turned out mostly ok, except for the loose cast-on edge, which I knit backward. If looks sort of lacey-droopy. My current project is a narrow cabled scarf (my first cable project--it makes me feel like a REAL knitter), using a gorgeous red unplied silk yarn (Fiesta yarns). I have to keep the yarn ball in a plastic bag while knitting so it won't get fuzzy.

Maisie: Welcome, ye who hear the call of the yarn. We are relatively new knitters, but I have knit a WHOLE LOT in the year that I have knit at all. I enjoy driving my mother insane with Zeppelin and Hendrix, or playing bass when I'm not knitting. The last thing I knit were some cabled Greensleeves I made up. Now my sisters want some. Right now, I am working on a pair of cabled socks from Chicknits out of Lorna's Laces (Black Purl colorway). But, the problem is, the first sock the ribbing was too loose. No problem, I thought, all happy and cheerful and optimistic. I'll just unravel the cast-on edge and knit the ribbing up on size 1 needles! So I unraveled that bit and put the needles in wrong, leading to lots of little sort ends not even long enough to weave in. Undeterred, I continued to knit up the ribbing. Then, I bound off regularly, neglecting to remember that a normal bind-off would be much too tight. I tried, and failed, to put the sock on. I tried several times to do a grafted cast-off, but failed. Please help the poor sock. Also below are The Greensleeves and the new Lorna's Laces. I'll post a picture of my boyfriend wearing the sweater I knit him later.
